A Broken Leg, Gratitude, and the Myth of the Perfect Moment

As some of you may already know, our little man broke his leg skiing almost a month ago now. Poor fella, the accident was a mere four days before his 10th birthday, and during the best skiing we’ve seen in years.

Only two runs into an epic powder day, he didn’t land a jump properly and snapped the tibia on his left leg.

A toboggan ride down to the clinic with ski patrol, a $900 X-Ray and a splint all the way from toes to thigh, later…he was on his way home.

The pain was pretty intense the first two weeks, and he didn’t do much else beside lay on the sofa and watch movies.  As a Mom it’s always heart wrenching to watch you baby suffer.

And while this certainly isn’t something I would ever wish on him, there’s been some really wonderful gifts in this experience.

One of the best moments. Meeting Olympic Gold Medalist, Johnny Moseley, who reassured Jaxon that bones heal, and he’ll be back out there in no time!

With him in the fourth grade now, and just recently double digits, I’m starting to feel the little boy slip away, as he becomes more and more independant and edges towards the tween years. Lord help me.

Losing his mobility and being forced to rely on Diego and I for support for everything –from getting something to eat, to getting dressed, to using the bathroom–has made him appreciate the interconnectedness of us all.

Through this healing journey, there’s been a lot of quality time together and extra snuggles which were getting fewer and farther between the accident. He had recently become embarrassed to be too affectionate with me at school in front of his friends. All that insecurity and wanna be cool guy stuff, has gone out the window since we’ve been able to spend so much time together and reconnect.  Sometimes you don’t even realize you’re disconnected until life gives you the opportunity (often through tragedy!) to plug back in.

And lastly, we have talked at length about being grateful for the simple things we take for granted, every single day! Most of us take our health for granted. We do a gratitude ritual at the dinner table every night, and you can bet that kid has never thought to be grateful for his leg. This experience has truly given him the perspective to see just how lucky he is on so many levels.

Just this week at the doctor, cutting the top half of the cast off. The lower half has to stay on for another 4 weeks. Just having a small bit of mobility restored, had him all smiles this week.

And for me, the lesson as a mom and caretaker has been that there is never a truly perfect moment for me to do the work I need to do. That life always has a way of throwing us curve balls, and the time really is now. I had worked so diligently to map out the timing of a new eCourse I’m offering, around the kids school schedule and breaks, and wouldn’t you know it, life comes in and interrupts the best laid plans. Life will show us again and again, that plans are great, but the real magic is in showing up without expectation and appreciating what we have.

“Don’t wait for the perfect moment.
Take the moment, and make it perfect.”

We just started this week, and it’s an amazing group of women! Already, we’re seeing shifts and ah-ha’s about how we’ve abandoned our creativity, our dreams, and let other people’s expectations and desires, supersede our own longings.  If  you’re looking to answer the call of your creativity, we’d love to have you join us! We’re a sweet, small group of about 20 and we can make space for a few more!

The techniques are simple and fun, and designed for those with limited time!

Me…taking time for ME, even in the midst of chaos. Accidently snapped a selfie, during one of the live streams with the magic makers in the Wand in the Word. Imperfect action is always better than perfection when it comes to making dreams real.
