A Peek at our New Neighborhood

Since sharing our experience house and school hunting last week is surely going to give you anxiety or put you to sleep–I just thought I’d share a few photos from my morning walk this AM.

All photos are taken within a mere 5 blocks of our current apartment.

I love the colors in Mexico.

Seriously, why is everything so boring in the States?
My initial impressions of this city for far:

The climate is perfect.

Perfect. Because the city is located at 1,555 meters, or 5,102 for you Americans out there, so it’s warm during the day (not hot!) nice and cool in the evenings (not cold!) it seriously is the perfect climate.

It’s gorgeous.

Not only is the architecture interesting, colorful and colonial, the urban center lays in a valley completely encircled by lush, green mountains in all directions. The outskirts of the city trickle up the hillsides, making for a delightful light show at night. Typically in the mornings the mountains are veiled in a thin misty fog, and the light filters down as everyone in the city center is waking up. The parks and streets are incredibly clean. I mean it’s still a city, but for someone coming from a pristine mountain town in Northern California, I’m impressed.

The size is ideal.

Again, I’m sort of a small town girl with a crush on city life, but too much urban bustle leaves me feeling drained and longing for nature. We’ve been moving about trying to get our bearings on which neighborhoods we’d like to settle into, and there seems to be the perfect mix of whimsical parks with impressive gardens and fountains,  sidewalk cafes, theaters, museums and such, but all served up in a stunning natural backdrop. We can get our hiking fix, with out starving our cultural cravings in the process.

The food. Yes, please.

We’ve been hearing about the food since we before we left California. Specifically the mole. Mole is a sauce made from spices and chiles, (the black mole uses chocolate…YUM!) and thickened with corn. The state of Oaxaca is internationally recognized for its diverse offering of moles, representing the different regions of the state. So far, I’ve only tried the black mole–so I have a lot to look forward to!

But for now, the abundance of fresh avocados, limes, pomegranates, mangos, pineapples, and ceviche is making me one happy, little mama.

And brother and sister are getting along better than ever. For now.
I’m excited to share my discoveries with you as my affair with our new home continues.

I saw your van on the street in Oaxaca and wrote down to visit your website. I’m glad I did! How lucky to live in such an amazing city and… oh man are you right about that food! Live it up!

But I want all the details! School and house hunting especially. Oh my god, I can almost taste those churros. Spanish churros have got nothing on Mexican churros.
It looks like the PERFECT place, I can’t wait to read more. Saludos x
